The prize was presented to joint winners Emma McClure (Solicitor Trainee) and John Marley ( Barrister Trainee) on Wednesday 26th June 2024. The ceremony was held at the Whitla Hall at Queens University.
Patricia Coyle of Harte Coyle Collins said;
“The arrest stage of a potential prosecution remains crucial frontline work for criminal defence lawyers. What happens at arrest and interview stage will influence the direction of both the subsequent police investigation and any potential prosecution. It is the cornerstone of the criminal justice system that a suspect in custody facing any criminal allegation should be able to seek confidential legal advice. The conduct of arrests and interviews in police stations has consequences for the ultimate outcome for the client. It is important that young lawyers are well trained and equipped to deal with all issues arising at arrest stage and to challenge the evidence and procedure when necessary.
We extend our congratulations to Emma and John and wish them well in their future legal careers.”
