Diarmaid Kelly of Harte Coyle Collins, Solicitors & Advocates today confirmed that he achieved one of the highest pension payouts under the Victims Permanent Disablement Scheme. The scheme was set up in 2014 by the government to compensate those who were present at or in the aftermath of a Troubles related incident and who suffered permanent physical and/or psychological injury as a consequence.
The client received a 5 figure sum after Mr Kelly prepared and lodged an application on his behalf. The client was present at a bomb explosion in Belfast in 1975 and suffered serious physical injuries and long term psychological trauma. The client was a person who saved others injured in the bomb by dragging a number of them to safety despite his own injuries. The client is the last surviving victim of the the 1975 bombing.
Diarmaid Kelly of Harte Coyle Collins said today;
” This pension scheme is important in our current society in that it acknowledges and compensates victims who suffered appalling long term injuries as a result of their presence during conflict related incidents. Our client was a Good Samaritan who ignored his own injuries to help others injured in the bombing. He was dreadfully affected over the past 49 years from 1975 and that suffering has now been properly recognised and addressed by the state. We are delighted to have been able to assist him in his application.”
