Harte Coyle Collins, Solicitors & Advocates are delighted to launch their Environmental Law Department.
Environmental law is an evolving area of domestic and international law. It covers a diverse range of areas. These can include everything from community groups acting against those responsible for pollution, to the environmental, social and governance responsibilities on business. Essentially it relates to the footprint we humans leave on our planet. The most important areas covered by environmental law include:
- Pollution
- Wildlife and natural habitat restoration and conservation
- Climate Change adaption and mitigation
- Air quality
- Biodiversity
- Waste reduction
- Renewable Energy
Everyone, from individuals to large companies and government departments, are affected by the obligations set out environmental law as well as the protection it affords. Since the beginning of devolution at the turn of the last century, the North of Ireland has lagged behind Europe in its implementation of environmental law and is too often described as “the dirty corner of Europe”. It remains an outlier in being the only jurisdiction without an independent Environmental Protection Agency. We want to do our part to help address the growing local and global environmental problems that face this generation and take action to protect our unique environmental assets for future generations. Increased regulation, the belated implementation of environmental laws currently on the statute book and an increased focus on climate change by governments around the world are expanding the importance of environmental and planning law.
Harte Coyle Collins are now specialising in environmental law, acting on behalf of individuals, concerned local groups, charities, and NGOs to address the categories above. Our Environmental Law Department includes partners Nichola Harte and Patricia Coyle and trainee solicitors Cathal Mullan and Meadbh O’Dowd.
